Jeremy -
HAHA
jk i'm not gonna respond to that bullshit.
PEACE
P.S. k h8rs let's go for 200 worthless comments
Jeremy thinks he's Beavis and Butthead but seriously he's Unclean Lice Infested Armpit Hair.
What do you get when you combine 2 stupid characters, retarded dialog utilizing internet typo slang, and completely unfunny and stupid jokes? This comic.
Actually, it was during a secret party with a bunch of DUMMCOMICS artists. we were watching a shitty hilarious movie "Immortal Combat" or something and there was a scene where the heroes were sitting around a fire and some weird native lady was offering them something in a cup and it sounded like she was saying "try deez, eets peeeza"
That's all for today's comic backstory.
Tune in next week for more anecdotal DUMMCOMICS stories....oh and comics too.
EVERYDAY.
DUMMCOMICS
BOOYA
BARNEY'S SON!
Ever.
BEST STRIP YET!!!!! Jeremy is outnumbered, 1 to a dozen.
Handpuppet is the cutest thing in this comic.
So congratulations on disproving your own theory.
Good job, David, keep it up!!!
I had a brief email exchange with Jeremy, and I've come to realize something.
This is a public forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how unpopular. Inititally, I had a negative reaction to Jeremy's rudeness... but this is after all the internet and people should be feel free to post their ideas without having to wear kid gloves. I'm not a fan of his aggressive style of expression but I've come to respect his candor. At the very least it generates debate among the fans and very vocal defense of the comics.
So let's welcome Jeremy with open arms. As Eminem says, "Cuz we need a little controversy"
BARBNEY'S SON, BRAH!!
I'll start here - I didn't enjoy today's strip for multiple reasons. The first being, it takes way too long to get to the punch line, which is very weak to begin with.
The second thing I had a problem with is I feel there may be hidden references in this comic today, but I for the life of me, can't see them. Not being able to associate with a comic at all can be frustrating and put a bad taste in your mouth.
I don't except authors to just hand me the core of the joke and be done with it, but it'd be nice if they helped you along instead of having to try to guess what the hell is going on.
Also, what does "Barney's Son" mean? BAM BAM? So confused.
I appreciate Jeremy's more constructive follow up, but that isn't to say I agree with it. (Yes, people can express any opinion they want on the internet, but that doesn't mean they should never be challenged). I don't understand the obsession with punch lines. For "Sorry, Guys", the trip is more than half the fun. The acting and expressions are hilarious! We're being given so much entertainment in the delivery that I'm more than willing to accept the absurdism.
In this case it's a fucking dolphin acting like a retard for 19 panels. Expressions can be a good and strong way to effect your comic and how people feel about it, but without any substance to back up these expressions it is nothing more then someone making funny faces for no damn reason. And in this case, the expressions aren't even that funny.
I'd enjoy the comic more if they took more time with the art, but a lot of times it looks like it was done in a rush without any real concern at all to how it actually looks.
But it isn't even the art that bothers me the most. I wish they'd spend more time thinking about where they are going with the comic and working on their writing. They have all week, so why are they going with below par work?
However, with it established that you don't like "Sorry, Guys", why keep reading and expressing your displeasure so regularly? Is there something in particular you're trying to accomplish here? Once you've given a strip a chance and you've come to realize it's something you don't like, why wouldn't you just move on and stick with strips you like?
Did anyone noticed I didn't post anything for last weeks Sorry Guys? Because it was at least half way decent, which made me so disappointed with this weeks strip. This comic is always a hit or a miss, there is never a in between.
Sorry but as long as you post on Dumm, I am going to check it out and give you my opinion. If you refuse to acknowledge it, that's your problem, not mine.
I don't really care for the "busy schedules" excuse when it comes to writing or drawing. If you don't have enough time in your week to give proper dedication to your comic, why even bother doing it?
While I was in school I ran a online game, it lasted 5 years and the website and server was mainly supported by player donations. After I graduated in 2004 I stopped running the game simply because with a full time job I didn't have enough time to properly run the game. It was a hobby of mine I enjoyed, but I didn't want to give them half assed work so I closed it down.
Now I am not telling the authors on Dumm Comics to just give up, but if you can't dedicated enough time to your side projects to make them worth while, why hog the comic slot when another comic could come along and fill it?
One web comic that decided they had to do a daily comic really started to slip. I called them on it and it was all out war. I tried to explain that if they took a little bit longer to deliver a higher quality product, I wouldn't mind. Because I don't mind waiting for something when it brings me pleasure. In the end it was resolved, but people often get very defensive very fast.
IF YOU DIDN'T PLEASE LEAVE 500 COMMENTS TELLING ME WHY IT SUX DIKK
THANKS
Personally, I cut a lot of corners on my own strip just to make it manageable, but I am still 100% happy with it at the end of the day. I wouldn't stop doing this for anything in the world because it's more rewarding than my day job could ever possibly be.
Responses like David's are really awesome though and it really shows just how ignorant some people are.
I still remember when the author go so butt hurt he had to post the troller comic. That is just 'epic win' right there.
By the way, when you weave in and out of sarcasm, it makes your point a little hard to follow.
You sure schooled me buddy.
But at the end of the day. The jeremy's of the world have nothing to show for themselves. If only they considered doing something more productive and positive with their time instead of pretending to have valid criticisms including "this is utter shit" "are you bipolar?"
Why it kind of reminds me of politics in a way. People love arguing and voicing their opinions, and if this comic provides them a source of daily discourse so be it. It's better that they vent their inner hate on my admittedly silly webcomic than go make death threats/rape threats/or go out and murder someone.
Alas, there is positive. Purge your hate jeremy. get it all out. Shit alll over this comic until it's out of you.
It may take years, It make even take a lifetime, but I believe in you.
you can become a normal human being. with a little effort and a willingness to change your ways.
Good luck
and Godspeed my good man.
There must be something about his psychology that makes him love to complain about stuff. Who knows what it is....but I can't say that it's a very likable trait.
That being said, I don't mind Jeremy. I mean, I wouldn't want to be around the guy....but he stirs up some shit in the comments section and makes things kinda interesting from time to time. You just can't take him too seriously, is all.
Only I can't draw = (
Anyways, this comic sux dikk because I want to know how to make cup pizza.
...because those are the only two options?
David - Even though I didn't get the inside joke, this comic still cracked me up. I swear that's the exact dialogue I have with my boyfriend whenever I try to ask how he made something...
And Jeremy - You, sir, are amazing. The world needs a douche bag every now and then, here and there, to keep the rest of the world in check... so keep on keeping on. But that being said, it would be nice if you voiced your encouragement too once in a while in addition to your normal (constructive?) criticism.
I much prefer his "this is shit" comments. I'm sure David does to.
I think what really turns panels into a true "comic" is the flow and direction between each scene. To me, comics are better when they lead up to a strong, fitting ending (like last week). I probably would have liked this skit a lot more as a whole if it had just ended two panels earlier, if only to give it more of a standard flow.
Of course, Sorry Guys has the honor of being a bigger wildcard than any other comic on Dumm, so it's only expected that people will like some pages much more than others. Considering you have actual experience in comics and art, I trust you're more likely than me to know whether this is a helpful opinion, an unhelpful/uninformed opinion, or a sheer matter of preference.
Either way, I can bet that the themes in your work that I like most (puns, double meanings, etc.) are always bound to show up some time or another, and that any criticisms I make (if nothing else) help give you a broader understanding of your audience.
Other than that, keep up the good work (whatever that is)!
Well maybe that big text wall hit some good points anyway. Whatever!
Most of the time I barely even skim the dialog, as the expressions are what reels me in. The character's are some of the most "alive" that I've ever seen, especially considering most of them are one shots.
I guess my only complaints would be that there is rarely a good "joke" and that the atmosphere is often chaotic and hard to follow.
I love you David Gemmill.
YOU ARE TOO FUNNY.
Seriously, I keep coming back to read and lol @ all of the madness. David, you should be proud to be the cause of so much excitement.
And I've reread the comic a couple times and it's still funny - I agree with comment 63.
@70 if they sell this guy in the Dumm store he should be a finger puppet... like those little rubber finger puppets with the wiggly arms and little teeth and bugged out eyes and everything. those are the best.
wow... actually, i was thinking that the cup had a pizza-barf in it. got me thinking... I respect that you didn't ruin the fun by actually telling what's in the cup. but i took 'using my hands' as a hint.
also... as a matter of fact, i always read the comments below Sorry guys (its part of the show, rgiht?). this comic managed to become the most commented strip on Dumm. i know its not a quality in itself, but it is something, innit?
also, i think the one with the troll had the highest standards visually (i think it had the most refined relation between the background and the characters, also, the nicest expressions). it's obvious you put the most effort and 'love' in that one :D
see, all this fuss made me write a longer comment, that nobody's gonna read.
This is exactly the reason why there are such things as critics and criticism. Without it, everything would just be the same.
Obviously the author of this comic can't handle the negative criticism which is fine, there are many people like that. The problem with that though, is the creator will never improve cause they ignore the negative and only accept the positive.
The only thing that happened in this comic is one guy is talking like an annoying immature internet nerd that has no comic value what so ever. It's not dialog it's just retarded banter. Which is why I said the only people that will like it is the "douchebags" of the internet. Those immature morons that find talking like that to be hilarious. If you want people to take a comic serious at least offer some sort of intelligent thought process within the comic. It's one thing to draw a comic, it's a whole new ball game when it comes to writing a comic worth reading. The dialogue will make or break a comic no matter how good or bad the art is.
Incredible!
why the HELL NOT
i even feel like this comic is, on one level, making fun of me, because i actually dress like that hipster character - but it's a funny gag, and it's a subject deserving of mockery. also shows that the author is poking fun a a wide range of targets, not just the weirdos on venice beach or bros or testosterone overloaded guys in cars (or trolls)
i'm really just here because i'm wondering if this will make it to 100 comments. it already went up by about 10 since i last checked it.
